The 2015 edition of the Pevsner guide to Suffolk West says in the Hawstead entry: "Church House, opposite." (the church) "Originally the Guildhall of St James, described as newly built in 1478. Timber-framed and plastered. Three-bay open hall with crown-post roof. Floor inserted in the C17".
